Staying Put for Second Season Was the Right Move for Utah’s Jakob Poeltl

SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah men’s basketball coach, Larry Krystkowiak, said Jakob Poeltl was a perfect example of why many college players should return for their sophomore year, bucking the trend of playing just one season.

Poeltl, a Utes center, announced Wednesday that he was leaving college to enter the N.B.A. draft after a spectacular second year in which he improved his game in almost every way.

“He’s a poster child for what it’s like to stick around for another year,” Krystkowiak said. “He’s certainly far more ready today than he would have been a year ago. I don’t know how much meat is left on the bone for Jakob in this college process. He’s being projected right now as a top-10 pick.”

Poeltl made his plans known during a news conference at the Utah basketball practice facility, with several teammates, Athletic Director Chris Hill and the coaching staff in attendance. Poeltl, a 7-foot Austrian, said that he had enjoyed the college experience, which made his decision more difficult, but that the draft was the next step in his basketball progression. He has yet to hire an agent.

“I don’t regret anything about coming here, about staying a second year,” Poeltl said. “I really wanted to stay for two more years, but I think it’s a necessary step for me. At the end of the day, it was a decision that was logical to me.”

Poeltl was named a second-team all-American and was the Pacific-12 Conference player of the year. He ranked No. 2 in the Pac-12 in scoring, with 17.2 points per game; No. 4 in rebounds, with 9.1 per game; and No. 1 in shooting percentage, at 64.6. Poeltl was the first Utah player to surpass 600 points in a season since Andrew Bogut did so in 2004-5.

The Utes advanced to the round of 16 during his freshman season, and Poeltl returned despite having been expected to be a first-round N.B.A. pick. He is now projected as a lottery selection.

NBA awards: Handicapping the Trail Blazers' chances of winning the NBA's top honors

Portland Trail Blazers guard C.J. McCollum (3) works to get around Washington Wizards forward Kelly Oubre Jr. (12) in the first half of an NBA basketball       game, Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, in Washington. The Trail Blazers won 108-98. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

It's almost awards season in the NBA and the Portland Trail Blazers feature a host of key figures at various levels of the organization in the running for hardware.

From President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey to All-Star Damian Lillard to coach Terry Stotts, the Blazers have legitimate options for voters to consider when they fill out ballots for awards ranging from Coach of the Year to MVP.

What's more, odds seem strong that one, perhaps even more, could win. Below is a look at the Blazers' best chances and how they stack up:

Most Improved Player: CJ McCollum

Status: Frontrunner

Stats: 20.9 ppg, 4.2 apg, 3.3 rpg, 44.8 percent field goal shooting, 42.0 percent three-point shooting, 34.8 mpg

Competition: Will Barton, Denver Nuggets; Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors; Kawhi Leonard, San Antonio Spurs; Andre Drummond, Detroit Pistons

Why he could win the award: The 2013 NBA Lottery pick was finally given a starting role this season and made the most of the opportunity, evolving from a player fighting for a rotation spot into one of the NBA's best perimeter scorers and most exciting young stars. With a versatile and lethal offensive game, he's dramatically improved his scoring, increasing his production from 6.8 points per game to 20.9, and that's not all. McCollum's stats have increased across the board, as his rebounding (1.5 to 3.3), assists (1.0 to 4.2) and steals (0.7 to 1.2) have seen a boost, while his shooting is up in every category. He leads the Blazers in minutes played (2,718), ranks second behind Lillard in scoring and assists, ranks 18th in the NBA in scoring and eighth in three-pointers made (195). He became the eighth player in franchise history to record at least 1,500 points and 300 assists in one season. Most important, McCollum has established himself as a cornerstone of the franchise.

Why he won't win the award: Some will argue McCollum's success is merely a byproduct of opportunity. He was handed the starting shooting guard role last summer and has used the increased role to showcase the ability he always had. But that's nitpicking. As Lillard said Friday, "I think it's a no-brainer that he's most improved." McCollum seems like a shoo-in to join Kevin Duckworth (1987-88) and Zach Randolph (2003-04) as the only players in franchise history to earn the award.

Executive of the Year: Neil Olshey

Status: Frontrunner

Competition: Masai Ujiri, Toronto Raptors; R.C. Buford, San Antonio Spurs; Rich Cho, Charlotte Hornets

Why he could win the award: Olshey didn't merely survive the soap opera that was the Blazers' 2015 offseason, he thrived through it. Juggling the impossible, he formed two free agency plans based on LaMarcus Aldridge's "decision" and executed Plan B to perfection when the All-Star power forward elected to defect to San Antonio. He proactively traded Nicolas Batum, then allowed Wesley Matthews and Robin Lopez to walk, waving goodbye to four-fifths of the Blazers' starting lineup and more than 50 percent of the team's production. Along the way, he stole Mason Plumlee from the Brooklyn Nets in a trade, acquired Moe Harkless for nothing, inked Lillard to a maximum contract extension and signed Ed Davis and Al-Farouq Aminu to reasonable free agent contracts. On top of it all, he traded for a future first-round draft pick at the NBA trade deadline. The Blazers are well stocked with young talent, well positioned financially and well ahead of their rebuilding schedule. The Blazers are supposed to be in the early stages of a painful and lengthy rebuild after the drama of last summer. Instead, thanks to smart, shrewd leadership from Olshey, they are on verge of finishing fifth in the Western Conference — one spot ahead of where last year's team finished.

Why he won't win the award: Olshey was hardly the only front office executive to have a good year. Buford fought off the Blazers and other suitors to lure Aldridge in free agency, signed David West to the veteran minimum and convinced his aging stars to keep fighting for championships. Cho, like Olshey, built the Hornets with clever, if unheralded, moves. And Ujiri has built the Raptors into a power in the East.

Coach of the Year: Terry Stotts

Status: Serious contender

Competition: Steve Kerr, Golden State Warriors; Steve Clifford, Charlotte Hornets; Dwane Casey, Toronto Raptors; Gregg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs

Why he could win the award: For all the credit Olshey deserves for constructing the Blazers' roster, Stotts deserves as much or more for guiding the collection of cast-offs to a better-than-expected season. Stotts deftly juggled the franchise's primary focus of development with winning and never wavered in his belief that the Blazers were better than everyone thought. He tinkered with lineups, massaged egos, nurtured the NBA's third-youngest roster and remained positive throughout it all. What's more, his players love playing for him. As the season winds down and the Blazers grow more reflective, multiple veterans — from Lillard to Davis to Gerald Henderson — initiate conversations centered on how important Stotts is to the Blazers' success. Heading into the season, Las Vegas put the Blazers' over-under on wins at 26.5. With two games left, they're 43-37, playing their best basketball of the season and poised to earn the fifth seed in the Western Conference. It's the most unlikely and impressive of Stotts' three playoff berths in Portland.

Why he won't win the award: Golden State could win 73 games, the most in NBA history. It's hard to deny the coach (Kerr) who guided a team to the most wins in the sport's history — particularly one season after he guided the team to the NBA Championship — the title of league's best.

MVP: Damian Lillard

Status: Longshot

Stats: 25.0 ppg, 6.8 apg, 4.1 rpg, 41.7 percent field goal shooting, 37.5 percent three-point shooting, 35.8 mpg

Competition: Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors; Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder; Kawhi Leonard, San Antonio Spurs; LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers

Why he could win the award: Since a sellout Moda Center crowd delivered a chorus of "MVP" chants to Lillard late in a February victory over the Brooklyn Nets, the Blazers' best player has been on the fringe of the MVP discussion. Lillard ranks fifth in the NBA in scoring, eighth in assists and third in three-pointers made (222). What's more, he is the undisputed leader of the NBA's most surprising team. The Blazers would not be anywhere near the playoff discussion — let alone flirting with the fifth seed in the West — without Lillard, whose mix of moxie, leadership, talent and consistency make him one of the NBA's best players.

Why he won't win the award: Two words: Steph Curry. The Warriors' star is expected to win in a landslide.

Barca seek Clasico worthy of Cruyff

Barca seek Clasico worthy of Cruyff
02 April 2016, 15:35

Barcelona's players and fans will pay tribute to club legend Johan Cruyff in an emotional Clasico clash with Real Madrid on Saturday with Barca coach Luis Enrique promising a spectacle the Dutch master would approve of.

A crowd of over 90,000 will hold aloft a pre-match display reading "Thank you Johan" with Barca's players to carry the same message on their shirts in the Catalan giants' first game since former player and coach Cruyff passed away last week at the age of 68.

"I am sure that what Cruyff would want more than any homage is that we win thanks to good football, putting on a spectacle and deserving it on the pitch," Luis Enrique said on Friday.

Barca head into the game looking to extend their remarkable unbeaten streak to 40 games in all competitions.

That run has allowed Luis Enrique's men to open up a nine-point lead over closest challengers Atletico Madrid with Real a further point behind in third and just eight games to play.

A 4-0 thrashing of Madrid in the only previous meeting between the sides this season in November put Barca well on track for a sixth title in eight seasons.

And Luis Enrique admitted that another win against their eternal rivals would prove a knockout blow to Real's title ambitions.

"If we win Atletico would be the only rival in the fight for the title," he added.

Real travel to Catalonia on the back of five consecutive wins themselves, raising hopes that coach Zinedine Zidane can rescue a forlorn campaign with a good end to the season, culminating in delivering the club's 11th European Cup.

MOST BEAUTIFUL THING

Zidane enjoyed plenty of success as a Madrid player at the Camp Nou -- most memorably scoring the opening goal with an imperious lob in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final in 2002.

"Clasicos are the most beautiful thing in football for a player," said the Frenchman.

"Now I am going to live it as a coach. It is the first, but I am very happy and will enjoy it."

However, stopping this Barca is a much tougher task for Zidane the coach than the player over a decade ago with the European champions bearing down on a second consecutive treble of Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League.

Barca's front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar have combined for 107 goals already this season, whilst Messi is just one off 500 for club and country in his career.

"It is a figure from another galaxy. Not even including goals in training would many players, including myself, get anywhere near that number," added Luis Enrique.

Barca's Jeremy Mathieu and Madrid's Raphael Varane were the only casualties from the club's international duties in midweek with both French centre-backs picking up injuries in Les Blues' 4-2 win over Russia on Tuesday.

Both coaches will therefore be able to name their preferred starting line-ups with both also refusing to countenance resting players ahead of arguably more pressing Champions League quarter-finals in midweek.

Tiredness could play a factor, in particular for Barca with all of Messi, Suarez, Neymar, Javier Mascherano and Dani Alves having played in World Cup qualifiers in South America over the past week.

Yet, Luis Enrique is hopeful that adrenalin will ensure his stars aren't affected.

"These type of games generate energy in players. It doesn't worry me at all," he said.

PHOTOS: Barcelona unveil Cruyff jersey for El Clasico

     By Joe Prince-WrightApr 1, 2016, 11:50 AM EDT

FC Barcelona has revealed a special jersey for Saturday’s huge El Clasico against Real Madrid.

The Catalan club unveiled the shirt on Friday, as they will honor club legend Johan Cruyff who died at the age of 68 last week.

Stitched into the front of each jersey will be the message: “Gracies Johan” which simply translates to “Thank You Johan.”

Cruyff was first a legendary player at Barcelona, then returned to the Nou Camp as manager as he won four La Liga titles and their first-ever European Cup in 1992.

The revolutionary Dutchman then helped turn Barca into one of the great forces of the modern game as his philosophy of open, attacking soccer was implemented at the club and he set up the now famous La Masia academy which has seen the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi graduate from and then go on to greatness.

El Clasico is always an emotional encounter for fans of Barcelona and Real Madrid but this Saturday’s encounter in La Liga will be even more emotional as a club legend is honored.

Barcelona is planning many more tributes to Cruyff in the build-up to Saturday’s game, with a four-day memorial already taking place at the Nou Camp and a mosaic will be held up just before kick off to honor Cruyff’s legacy in the Catalan capital.

Here’s a look at the new jersey which will be worn by Barcelona’s players on Saturday.

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has warned Barcelona that his side still believes a Clasico win will keep its title hopes alive.

Gareth Bale says that Real Madrid has not given up hope of snatching the Liga title from Barcelona's grasp.

The champions hold a 10-point advantage over third-placed Madrid with just eight matches to go and are enjoying a 39-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

Bale, however, insists his side can still claim its first league title since 2012 if it is able to win Saturday's Clasico at Camp Nou.

"I believe everything is possible in football. We're 10 points behind, but we're going to keep fighting until it's impossible," he said.

"On Saturday, we can move to within seven points and you never know what can then happen. Obviously every game is important in La Liga, if we win we can gain confidence and take that into the Champions League."

Bale went on to praise the work of Zinedine Zidane, who will oversee his first Clasico as Madrid boss this weekend, and says the squad is benefiting from his hard-line approach.

"We want to play like a team, to attack and defend together. When the 11 are on the pitch we know what we have to do is easier," said the Wales international. "Sometimes we need to be shouted at. It gives us a nudge in the right direction. I hope we finish the season with a trophy."

Bale admitted he feels far more comfortable in the Spanish capital this season after becoming acclimatized to life outside of the Premier League.

"I think things have changed a little. It's true that my form was not good. This season I wanted to give everything, to improve," the former Tottenham forward added.

"It's difficult to play in a foreign country. I feel better in the team and I think I've got better on the pitch. I feel more comfortable here, I speak a bit of Spanish. I think I have to continue working hard, improving, giving me best to help the team."

Barca won November's reverse fixture 4-0 and has not lost a home league match to Madrid since 2012.

US READY TO BE ’NASTY’ IN WORLD CUP DUEL - CAMERON

Tuesday, 29 March 2016 01:22

LOS ANGELES: Geoff Cameron says the United States are ready to show their nasty streak as they prepare to face Guatemala on Tuesday in what has become a must-win World Cup qualifying battle.

Two years after providing one of the most compelling storylines of the 2014 World Cup, where they advanced to the last 16, the Americans are now in danger of missing out on qualification for Russia 2018.

A shock 2-0 defeat away to Guatemala last Friday has left Jurgen Klinsmann's squad in third place in Group C of the fourth round of qualifying in North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF).

Another defeat in the return match in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday would be all but fatal for the USA's hopes of qualification -- and would deal a crushing blow to American soccer.

The USA has played at every World Cup since 1990. Stoke City defender Cameron insists however that the team has the experience to keep calm under pressure on Tuesday.

"We know how anxious we'll be and you want that goal to come early, but if it doesn't you have 90 minutes to put the ball in the back of the net. So if it doesn't happen in the first half, we have 45 minutes to do it in the second half," Cameron told USSoccer.com.

"We believe in each other, we believe in our ability and the strengths that we have. I think it'll come. It's just a matter of time and breaking them down. Once one goes in, hopefully more go in as well."

Cameron warned however that the Americans would be ready to win ugly if necessary.

"This is our World Cup," said Cameron. "This is what it comes down to. We have 90 minutes to put three points on the board and get a win and that's all we care about. If it's pretty, ugly, it doesn't matter.

"Results are what counts and we have to do whatever it takes to win. If we have to be nasty and be more aggressive and show our strength in other ways, then we have to do that.

"It's going to be a tough game. It's never easy, but if we show up and play as well as we know how to play, I think we'll be fine."
